Following an early career in commercial art, David turned to full-time painting in 1978. His painting of an 18th century frontiersman was selected for the poster for the Fine Arts Pavilion at the 1982 World's Fair. In addition, David's paintings have been featured in television documentaries and as covers and illustrations for numerous books and magazines. An avid historian, he has written scholarly articles for various publications, as well as contributing chapters in some well-known books on the American frontier.

David appeared on television as an historical consultant in Boone & Crockett: The Hunter-Heroes, which has aired numerous times on the History Channel. He was recently named as Art Director for Native Suns Productions' high definition, award -winning film Daniel Boone and the Westward Movement for the Cumberland Gap National Park. More recently, he provided art direction for the Native Sun Productions History Channel film: First Invasion - The War of 1812, for which he received a Prime Time Emmy nomination. His portrait of Confederate boy hero, Sam Davis hangs in the Sam Davis Boyhood Home Museum in Smyrna, TN. He has also completed a signature painting of Martin's Station for the Wilderness Road State Park Visitors' Center at Ewing, VA.

David and his wife Jane live outside Nashville, Tennessee.
