About
the artist:
With little formal training, artist Jim Bortz learned
his skill set by reading, watching, and listening… oh, and an almost
unhealthy dose of bullheaded determination! A believer in the importance
of accurate drawing, his ever-present sketchbooks bulge with thousands
of graphite drawings and notes from his adventures. His love for
the outdoor world is reflected in much of his art. Jim’s work has
always revolved around nature and wildlife art, yet he welcomes
opportunities to delve into other subject matter. Landscapes, still-life,
figures, and portraits are all in play each time Jim enters the
studio.
Jim’s work has been included multiple times in the
prestigious Birds In Art exhibit at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art
Museum in Wausau, WI. The LYWAM’s drawing collection includes pages
from Jim’s working sketchbooks and the museum hosted a lecture on
his multifaceted career as an artist and outdoor writer. The Ohio
Valley Art League National Wildlife exhibit has also recognized
Jim’s work as some of the finest in the country and honored him
with the George Whittington Memorial Award in 2008. An avid outdoorsman,
Jim has been a Field Editor for Musky Hunter Magazine for many years.
Jim resides in Northwestern PA.
